MLB Season Review: New York Yankees thrash Texas Rangers 2-1 in three-game series
American League’s New York Yankees and Texas Rangers both were energetic after ending their 2011 season in a style. Yankees were amazing and did an outstanding job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after thrashing the Rangers comfortably.
Let us capture an overview of these games and see how the Yankees dominated the Rangers.
Game 1 – May 6: New York Yankees 4 – Texas Rangers 1
Yankees managed a 4-1 win in the series starter, as Ivan Nova was impressive with his pitching. He had only one strike-out with an ERA of 4.08 in the Yankees convincing victory. Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said, “Curtis was outstanding with the two home
runs and giving us a lead. I expected him to be productive and hit the ball really hard, but 10 home runs?”
Rangers were able to score only one run in the opening game. Matt Harrison threw beautifully for the Rangers but that was not adequate to secure a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only three batters on his 119 pitches and permitted four hits with
two earned runs.
Game 2 – May 7: New York Yankees 5 – Texas Rangers 7
During the second game, Rangers defeated the Yankees 7-5. Rangers’ starter, Derek Holland threw the ball in good line as he pitched three innings and surrendered five walks and four hits on his 77 pitches. Holland had four strike-outs with an ERA of 5.18.
Girardi said, “Absolutely. That's why I went to the mound, to try to prepare for it. They had to execute. It's a gutsy call with nobody out, and they executed.”
Yankees were belligerent with the bat and were able to yield only five runs until the end of the game. Bartolo Colon had a shaky day with the ball as he threw just over four innings with an ERA of 3.86 and gave away nine hits and five runs with four strike-outs
on his 76 pitches.
Game 3 – May 8: New York Yankees 12 – Texas Rangers 5
During the final game of the series, Rangers lost 12-5. Yankees’ short-stop Derek Jeter shined as he struck three RBIs and went 4-for-6 with an average of .276. Yankees’ starter, CC Sabathia pitched just six innings and allowed four walks and five hits including
two strike-outs.
Jeter said, “I just want to be comfortable. ... It's pretty difficult to hit when you're sitting around trying to think of too many things, and I found myself thinking of things early on.”
Rangers were able to contribute just five runs in the series climax and failed to take over the Yankees. Rangers’ starter, Dave Bush pitched four innings and gave away three runs, four hits and two earned runs including two strike-outs on his 67 pitches.
However, a collective effort kept the Yankees on top against the struggling Rangers throughout the series.
