MLB Season Review: Philadelphia Phillies defeat Washington Nationals 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals both battled it out in a thrilling three game series. Phillies did a tremendous job as they sealed a 2-1 victory in this series after defeating the Nationals convincingly. Phillies have had
a remarkable season so far as they got an acceptable Win-Loss record.
Let us take a brief summary of these thrilling games:
Game 1 – April 12: Philadelphia Phillies 4 – Washington Nationals 7
Nationals directed a 7-4 win in the first game, as Livan Hernandez was incredible with his pitching. He threw just over six respective innings with an ERA of 3.50 and struck-out six batters in the Nationals victory. Jayson Werth said, “Any time you hit a
home run you're going to have some satisfaction. Was it extra special against those guys? Probably a little bit.”
On the other side, Phillies’ batters were able to add only four runs right through the complete game. Joe Blanton pitched well for the Phillies but that was not enough to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out four batters during his 86 pitches
and gave away one walk, seven hits, five runs, one home-run and five earned runs with an ERA of 10.45.
Game 2 – April 13: Philadelphia Phillies 3 – Washington Nationals 2
In the second game, Phillies outclassed the Nationals 3-2. Phillies’ starter, Roy Halladay pitched the ball accurately as he threw nine innings and allowed only six hits with an ERA of 1.23. Halladay struck-out nine batters during his 123 pitches.
Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel said, “He beared down at the end. He reached back and got something. Good pitchers do. When you reach down and do, that means you're in good shape.”
Nationals were shaky with the bat and added just two runs until the end of the game. John Lannan had a bad day with the ball as he pitched six innings with an ERA of 3.38 and surrendered six hits with three walks on his 100 pitches. Lannan struck-out three
batters and gave away just two earned runs.
Game 3 – April 14: Philadelphia Phillies 4 – Washington Nationals 0
During the last game of this exciting series, the Nationals lost 4-0. Phillies’ catcher Carlos Ruiz shined as he struck one RBI and went 2-for-4 with an average of .351. He put in a brilliant performance to lead the team.
Nationals’ batters were unable to yield any runs in the series finale. Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven innings and gave away four runs, five hits, one earned run and one home-run on his 85 pitches. However, an impressive team effort gave the Phillies a series
win against the struggling Nationals.
