MLB Season Review: Philadelphia Phillies edge out New York Mets 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets battled it out in an exciting three-game series. Phillies were remarkable and did a significant job as they confirmed a 2-1 victory in the series after defeating the Mets comfortably.
Let us take a summary of these three games and see how the Phillies dominated the Mets.
Game 1 – April 29: New York Mets 3 – Philadelphia Phillies 10

Phillies directed a 10-3 win in the first game, as Vance Worley was impressive with his pitching. He had five strike-outs with an ERA of 0.00 in the Phillies convincing victory. Ryan Howard said, “I hit that one pretty square, knew pretty much it was going
to go. It was just a matter of where and how far. Just got ready, saw it and put good swings on.”
Mets’ batters were able to contribute only three runs in the initial game. Mike Pelfrey threw beautifully for the Mets but that was not enough to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only three batters on his 72 pitches and permitted eight
hits with four earned runs.
Game 2 – April 30: New York Mets 1 – Philadelphia Phillies 2
During the second game, Phillies outshined the Mets 2-1. Phillies’ starter, Roy Halladay threw the ball in good line as he pitched nine innings and surrendered just one walk and seven hits on his 107 pitches. Halladay had eight strike-outs with an ERA of
2.14.
Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel said, “Roy's condition is off the chart. We all know that. I will compare him to a boxer who's going 12 rounds and he's trying for 25.”
Mets were jagged with the bat and were able to post just one run until the end of the game. Jonathon Niese had a shaky day with the ball as he threw just over six innings with an ERA of 4.71 and gave away six hits, two runs, two walks, one homer and two
earned runs on his 96 pitches.
Game 3 – May 1: New York Mets 2 – Philadelphia Phillies 1
During the final game of the series, Phillies lost 2-1. Mets’ third baseman David Wright shined as he completed two runs including one walk and went 3-for-6 with an average of .255. Mets’ starter, Chris Young pitched seven innings and allowed only two hits
and three walks including seven strike-outs.
Mets’ manager, Terry Collins said, “That's pretty impressive, five hits in his first full game. And he handled the pitchers very well.”
Phillies were able to score only one run in the series finale and failed to sweep the Mets. Cliff Lee pitched seven innings and gave away one run, eight hits, one earned run and two walks on his 113 pitches. However, a group effort kept the Phillies on top
against the struggling Mets throughout the series.
