MLB Season Review: Philadelphia Phillies sweep San Diego Padres 4-0
National League’s San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies went head-to-head in a thrilling four game series. Phillies did an impressive job as they sealed a 4-0 victory in this series after defeating the Padres comfortably. Phillies have had a remarkable
season so far as they got an acceptable Win-Loss record during the season.
Let us take a brief outline of these thrilling games:
Game 1 – April 21: Philadelphia Phillies 3 – San Diego Padres 0

Phillies directed a 3-0 win in the first game, as Roy Oswalt was incredible with his pitching. He threw his respective six innings with an ERA of 1.88 and struck-out seven batters in the Phillies victory. Oswalt said, “I thought about coming up with a new
pitch. Actually the last pitch I struck him out on, I did. I usually throw a slider one way and I actually threw it a different way. It worked.”
On the other side, Padres’ batters were unable to add any run right through the complete game. Mat Latos pitched well for the Padres but that was not enough to steal a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only seven batters during his 107 pitches
and gave away five walks, four hits, three runs, two home-runs and three earned runs with an ERA of 5.94.
Game 2 – April 22: Philadelphia Phillies 2 – San Diego Padres 0
In the second game, Phillies outclassed the Padres 2-0. Phillies’ starter, Cole Hamels pitched the ball accurately as he threw eight innings and allowed just four hits with an ERA of 2.92. Hamels struck-out eight batters on his 126 pitches.
Padres were shaky with the bat again and did not add any runs until the end of the game. Clayton Richard had an average day with the ball as he pitched just over seven innings with an ERA of 3.95 and surrendered six hits with four walks on his 110 pitches.
Richard struck-out four batters and allowed just two earned runs.
Game 3 – April 23: Philadelphia Phillies 4 – San Diego Padres 2
During the third game of the series, Padres lost 4-2. Phillies’ short-stop Jimmy Rollins shined as he struck one RBI and went 1-for-3 with an average of .253.
Ryan Howard said, “I'm just trying to take it and use it as motivation. Glad I came through.”
Padres’ batters yielded only two runs in this crucial game. Tim Stauffer pitched six innings and gave away two runs, four hits, two earned runs and one walk on his 95 pitches.
Game 4 – April 24: Philadelphia Phillies 3 – San Diego Padres 1
Phillies won the series finale 3-1 as each player executed particularly well in their respective disciplines. Roy Halladay threw just over eight innings with an ERA of 2.41 and struck-out 14 batters. However, a decent team effort gave the Phillies an incredible
series win against the struggling Padres.
