MLB Season Review: Pittsburgh Pirates beat Cincinnati Reds 3-1 in four-game series
National League’s Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds both fought well in a thrilling four game series. Pirates did a noticeable job as they sealed a 3-1 victory in this series after defeating the Reds convincingly. Pirates have had a remarkable season
so far as they got an acceptable Win-Loss record.
Let us take a brief summary of these inspiring games:
Game 1 – April 15: Pittsburgh Pirates 6 – Cincinnati Reds 1
Pirates directed a 6-1 win in the first game, as Charlie Morton was incredible with his pitching. He threw his respective nine innings with an ERA of 1.64 and struck-out three batters in the Pirates victory. Neil Walker said, "At the end of the series at
home, we were pressing. We were thinking we had to win. We relaxed a little bit today."
On the other side, Reds’ batters were able to add only one run right through the complete game. Bronson Arroyo pitched well for the Reds but that was not enough to steal a win for his team. He was able to strike-out four batters during his 92 pitches and
gave away two walks including nine hits with an ERA of 4.24.
Game 2 – April 16: Pittsburgh Pirates 2 – Cincinnati Reds 11
In the second game, Reds outclassed the Pirates 11-2. Reds’ starter, Mike Leake pitched the ball in accurate line but was expensive as he threw six innings and allowed four hits with an ERA of 5.40. Leake struck-out only six batters on his 102 pitches and
gave away four walks with two earned runs.
Pirates were shaky with the bat and added just two runs until the end of the game. James McDonald had an insecure day with the ball as he pitched just over four innings with an ERA of 7.47 and surrendered nine hits with six earned runs on his 90 pitches.
McDonald struck-out only two batters.
Game 3 – April 17: Pittsburgh Pirates 7 – Cincinnati Reds 6
During third game of the series, Reds lost 7-6. Pirates’ centre-fielder Andrew McCutchen shined as he struck two RBIs and went 3-for-3 with an average of .250.
Reds’ batters yielded only six runs in this crucial game. Edinson Volquez pitched just over five innings and gave away six runs, five hits, six earned runs and six walks on his 110 pitches.
Game 4 – April 18: Pittsburgh Pirates 9 – Cincinnati Reds 3
Pirates won the series finale 9-3 as each player executed particularly well in their respective disciplines. Kevin Correia threw his nine innings with an ERA of 2.48 and struck-out five batters. However, a decent team effort gave the Pirates the series win
against the struggling Reds.
