MLB Season Review: Pittsburgh Pirates rout Colorado Rockies 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies fought it out in a thrilling three-game series. Pirates were remarkable and did a significant job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after beating the Rockies comfortably.
Let us take a summary of these three games and see how the Pirates subjugated the Rockies.
Game 1 – April 29: Pittsburgh Pirates 3 – Colorado Rockies 0
Pirates managed a 3-0 win in the series starter, as Kevin Correia was impressive with his pitching. He had four strike-outs with an ERA of 2.90 in the Pirates convincing victory. Speaking to reporters, Correia said, “It's a hard thing to do. That team has
always had a good offense, so it's an accomplishment and it was a first for the Pirates here.”
Rockies’ batters were unable to contribute any run in the initial game. Jhoulys Chacin threw beautifully for the Rockies but that was not enough to thrash a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only eight batters on his 101 pitches and permitted six
hits with three earned runs.
Game 2 – April 30: Pittsburgh Pirates 1 – Colorado Rockies 4
During the second game, Rockies defeated the Pirates 4-1. Rockies’ starter, Jason Hammel threw the ball in good line as he pitched seven innings and surrendered two walks and six hits on his 105 pitches. Hammel had four strike-outs with an ERA of 3.23.
Hammel said, “I was like, ‘Well, no shutout tonight, I guess,’ It was a 2-1 fastball down the middle. He's a big-league hitter and he did what he was supposed to do.”
Pirates struggled with the bat and were able to take only one run until the end of the game. Paul Maholm had a shaky day with the ball as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 4.14 and gave away seven hits, four runs, three walks, one homer and four earned
runs on his 101 pitches.
Game 3 – May 1: Pittsburgh Pirates 8 – Colorado Rockies 4
During the final game of the series, Rockies lost 8-4. Pirates’ right-fielder Garrett Jones shined as he struck three RBIs and went 2-for-4 with an average of .278. Pirates’ starter, Charlie Morton pitched just over five innings and allowed only four runs
and five walks including one strike-out.
Rockies were able to score only four runs in the series finale and failed to dominate the Pirates. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched four innings and gave away four runs, six hits, four earned runs and four walks on his 88 pitches. However, a decent group effort kept
the Pirates on top against the incompatible Rockies throughout the series.
