MLB Season Review: Pittsburgh Pirates rout San Diego Padres 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres fought it out in a thrilling three-game series. Pirates were extraordinary and did a noteworthy job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after beating the Padres comfortably.
Let us take a rundown of these three games and see how the Pirates subjugated the Padres.
Game 1 – May 2: Pittsburgh Pirates 4 – San Diego Padres 3
Pirates managed a 4-3 win in the series starter, as James McDonald was impressive with his pitching. He had five strike-outs with an ERA of 6.75 in the Pirates convincing victory. Pirates’ manager, Clint Hurdle said, “We hit two out and we didn't see a whole
lot of grass. I think we shot more balls into the dugout than we did out in the field for hits.”
Padres’ batters were able to put in only three runs in the opening game. Aaron Harang threw beautifully for the Padres but that was not adequate to grab a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only four batters on his 98 pitches and permitted five
hits with four earned runs.
Game 2 – May 3: Pittsburgh Pirates 5 – San Diego Padres 6
During the second game, Padres defeated the Pirates 6-5. Padres’ starter, Mat Latos threw the ball in good line as he pitched six innings and surrendered two walks and five hits on his 89 pitches. Latos had five strike-outs with an ERA of 4.55.
Speaking to reporters, Heath Bell said, “It's a huge honour that my name is in the same sentence with Trevor Hoffman. I know my answer is really boring.”
Pirates struggled with the bat and were able to take only five runs until the end of the game. Jeff Karstens had a shaky day with the ball as he threw four innings with an ERA of 4.05 and gave away six hits and two walks with four strike-outs on his 87 pitches.
Game 3 – May 4: Pittsburgh Pirates 7 – San Diego Padres 4
During the final game of the series, Padres lost 7-4. Pirates’ catcher Ryan Doumit shined as he struck four RBIs and went 2-for-3 with an average of .259. Pirates’ starter, Kevin Correia pitched six innings and allowed only two runs and two walks including
three strike-outs.
Padres were able to score only four runs in the series finale and failed to dominate the Pirates. Padres’ starter, Clayton Richard pitched five innings and gave away seven runs, four hits, one earned run and three walks on his 94 pitches. However, a tremendous
team effort kept the Pirates on top against the Padres throughout the series.
