MLB Season Review: San Francisco Giants rout Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants fought it out in a thrilling three game series. Giants put in a brilliant performance and did a significant job as they completed a 2-1 victory in the series after defeating the Pirates comfortably.
Let us take an overview and see how the Giants dominated the Pirates.
Game 1 – April 26: San Francisco Giants 3 – Pittsburgh Pirates 2
Giants directed a 3-2 win in the first game, as Matt Cain was impressive with his pitching. He had six strike-outs with an ERA of 3.34 in the Giants impressive victory. Speaking to reporters, Cain said, “A little one-hopper to second, basically you just
figure you've run out of luck right there. He saw Walker kind of lobbed it to first and trusted his speed.”
Pirates’ batters were able to score only two runs in the first game. Charlie Morton threw beautifully for the Pirates but that was not enough to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only six batters on his 96 pitches and permitted four hits
with one earned run.
Game 2 – April 27: San Francisco Giants 0 – Pittsburgh Pirates 2
During the second game, Pirates outshined the Giants 2-0. Pirates’ starter, James McDonald threw the ball in good line as he pitched six innings and surrendered just four walks and four hits on his 98 pitches. McDonald had three strike-outs with an ERA of
7.66.
Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy said, “I thought Madison did a great job. He kept his poise and stayed away from the crooked number that has killed him. It's tough to not get runs for him.”
Giants were unable to get going with the bat and were unable to score run until the end of the game. Madison Bumgarner had an unsatisfactory day with the ball as he threw six innings with an ERA of 6.17 and gave away five hits, one run, one walk, no homer
and one earned run on his 97 pitches.
Game 3 – April 28: San Francisco Giants 5 – Pittsburgh Pirates 2
During the final game of the series, Pirates lost 2-5. Giants’ centre-fielder Aaron Rowand shined as he completed one run including three RBIs and went 2-for-5 with an average of .286. Giants’ starter, Ryan Vogelsong pitched just over five innings and allowed
four hits, two runs, two earned runs including eight strike-outs.
Pirates were able to post only two runs in the series finale and failed to sweep the Giants. Jeff Karstens pitched just over six innings and gave away five runs, seven hits, two earned runs and one walk on his 93 pitches. However, a team effort kept the
Giants on top against the struggling Pirates throughout the series.
