MLB Season Review: Seattle Mariners sweep Detroit Tigers 3-0 in three-game series
American League’s Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers both were dynamic after finishing their 2011 season in style. Mariners were amazing and did a significant job as they completed a 3-0 victory in this series after defeating the Tigers comfortably.
Let us take an overview and see how the Mariners swept the Tigers.
Game 1 – April 26: Seattle Mariners 7 – Detroit Tigers 3
Mariners directed a 7-3 win in the first game, as Felix Hernandez was impressive with his pitching. He had four strike-outs with an ERA of 3.32 in the Mariners convincing victory. Speaking to reporters, Hernandez said, “I didn't have my good stuff, but I
just battled and battled and battled. The guys got some runs for me, and we won the game.”
Tigers’ batters were able to make only three runs in the first game. Phil Coke threw beautifully for the Tigers but that was not enough to thrash a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only four batters on his 70 pitches and permitted eight hits with
seven earned runs.
Game 2 – April 27: Seattle Mariners 10 – Detroit Tigers 1
During the second game, Mariners dominated the Tigers 10-1. Mariners’ starter, Erik Bedard threw the ball in good line as he pitched seven innings and surrendered just one run and five hits on his 88 pitches. Bedard had three strike-outs with an ERA of 5.96.
Tigers were serrated with the bat and scored just one run until the end of the game. Justin Verlander had a shaky day with the ball as he threw six innings with an ERA of 3.64 and gave away five hits, four runs, three walks, one homer and three earned runs
on his 114 pitches.
Game 3 – April 28: Seattle Mariners 7 – Detroit Tigers 2
During the final game of the series, Tigers lost 7-2. Mariners’ short-stop Luis Rodriguez shined as he completed one run including three RBIs and went 1-for-4 with an average of .206. Mariners’ starter, Michael Pineda pitched six innings and allowed four
hits, two runs, two earned runs including nine strike-outs.
Pineda said, “He's a pretty good hitter. I'm focused and threw the ball down -- my slider down. No mistakes, because he has a lot of power.”
Tigers were able to post only two runs in the series finale and failed to avoid a clean sweep against the Mariners. Brad Penny pitched seven innings and gave away four runs, nine hits, four earned runs and one home-run on his 112 pitches. However, a good
team effort kept the Mariners on top against the inconsistent Tigers throughout the series.
