MLB Season Review: St. Louis Cardinals beat Cincinnati Reds 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds both were energetic after finishing their spring training season in style. Cardinals were amazing and did an apparent job as they completed a 2-1 victory in this series after defeating the Reds.
Let us take an overview and see how the Cardinals overcame the Reds.
Game 1 – April 22: Cincinnati Reds 2 – St. Louis Cardinals 4

Cardinals directed a 4-2 win in the first game, as Kyle McClellan was impressive with his pitching. He had two strike-outs with an ERA of 2.16 in the Cardinals impressive victory. Cardinals’ manager, Tony La Russa said, “That was the risk. There was a strong
chance there was going to be rain and I didn't want to blow Kyle out. The forecasts were flying fast and furious.”
Conversely, Reds’ batters were able to chip in only two runs in the entire game. Matt Maloney pitched well for the Reds but that was not enough to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only one batter on his 73 pitches and permitted eight hits
with three earned runs.
Game 2 – April 23: Cincinnati Reds 5 – St. Louis Cardinals 3
In the second game, the Reds outshined the Cardinals 5-3. Reds’ starter, Travis Wood threw the ball in good line as he pitched just over six innings and surrendered just three runs and three earned runs with eight hits on his 87 pitches. Wood had five strike-outs
with an ERA of 5.40.
Speaking to reporters, Miguel Cairo said, “I was just trying to stay back and see what was coming. He left it out over the plate and I was just lucky enough to get a hit.”
Cardinals struggled with the bat and scored only three runs until the end of the game. Chris Carpenter had a bad day with the ball as he threw six innings with an ERA of 3.90 and gave away two hits, two runs, three walks, one homer and two earned runs on
his 103 pitches.
Game 3 – April 24: Cincinnati Reds 0 – St. Louis Cardinals 3
During the final game of the series, Reds lost 3-0. Cardinals’ catcher Yadier Molina shined as he completed one run including three RBIs and went 2-for-4 with an average of .277.
Reds were unable to post any run in the last game. Edinson Volquez pitched just over five innings and gave away three runs, six hits, three earned runs and three walks on his 105 pitches. However, an impressive team effort kept the Cardinals on top against
the struggling Reds throughout the series. The Reds were disappointed by their performance as they were unable to get things going on the offence.
