MLB Season Review: St. Louis Cardinals dominate Atlanta Braves 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals went head-to-head in a thrilling three-game series. Cardinals were remarkable and did a significant job as they confirmed a 2-1 victory in the series after defeating the Braves comfortably.
Let us take a summary of these three games and see how the Cardinals subjugated the Braves.
Game 1 – April 29: St. Louis Cardinals 5 – Atlanta Braves 3
Cardinals directed a 5-3 win in the first game, as Chris Carpenter was impressive with his pitching. He had three strike-outs with an ERA of 3.89 in the Cardinals convincing victory. Nick Punto said, “I was looking for a fastball. I got a fastball, middle
in, and put some good wood on it. It didn't hit anybody. It landed in the corner, so we got a couple of runs.”
Braves’ batters were able to contribute only three runs in the initial game. Tim Hudson threw beautifully for the Braves but that was not enough to secure a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only three batters on his 99 pitches and permitted six
hits with two earned runs.
Game 2 – April 30: St. Louis Cardinals 3 – Atlanta Braves 2
During the second game, Cardinals outshined the Braves 3-2. Cardinals’ starter, Jake Westbrook threw the ball in good line as he pitched six innings and surrendered just three walks and five hits on his 106 pitches. Westbrook had only one strike-out with
an ERA of 6.53.
Cardinals’ manager, Tony La Russa said, "We've been resilient, hanging in there. These last two games have been exciting because the baseball has been so good."
Braves struggled with the bat and were able to take only two runs until the end of the game. Brandon Beachy had an average day with the ball as he threw seven innings with an ERA of 3.47 and gave away three hits, two runs, one walk, no homer and two earned
runs on his 97 pitches.
Game 3 – May 1: St. Louis Cardinals 5 – Atlanta Braves 6
During final game of the series, Cardinals lost 6-5. Braves’ short-stop Alex Gonzalez shined as he completed two runs including two RBIs and went 1-for-4 with an average of .231. Braves’ starter, Derek Lowe pitched five innings and allowed only six hits
and two walks including five strike-outs.
Cardinals were able to score only five runs in the series finale and failed to dominate the Braves. Jaime Garcia pitched six innings and gave away four runs, five hits, three earned runs and one walk on his 99 pitches. However, a decent group effort kept
the Cardinals on top against the incompatible Braves throughout the series.
