MLB Season Review: Tampa Bay Rays brush aside Baltimore Orioles 3-0 in three-game series
American League’s Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles fought it out in a thrilling three-game series. Rays were unbelievable and did a notable job as they sealed a 3-0 victory in the series after hammering the Orioles comfortably.
Let us take a concise outline of these fabulous games and see how the Rays swept the Orioles.
Game 1 – May 6: Tampa Bay Rays 6 – Baltimore Orioles 2
Rays directed a 6-2 win in the first game, as James Shields was impressive with his pitching. He had five strike-outs with an ERA of 2.01 in the Rays convincing victory. Speaking to reporters, Shields said, “It was raining pretty hard out there. Having to
deal with the delays out there, with that team and that lineup over there, to be able to hold them in check is pretty nice.”
Orioles’ batters took just two runs in the series starter. Zach Britton threw beautifully for the Orioles but that was not enough to earn a win for his team. He was able to strike-out only four batters on his 95 pitches and permitted four hits with three
earned runs.
Game 2 – May 7: Tampa Bay Rays 8 – Baltimore Orioles 2
During the second game, Rays overcome the Orioles 8-2. Rays’ starter, Jeremy Hellickson threw the ball in good line as he pitched five innings and surrendered just five walks and three hits on his 92 pitches. Hellickson had four strike-outs with an ERA of
3.72.
Rays’ manager, Joe Maddon said, “I'm glad we did that. A really great day. Good at-bats. He looked good, he looked comfortable. A big part of our win.”
Orioles struggled with the bat and contributed just two runs until the end of the game. Jeremy Guthrie had a bad day with the ball as he threw five innings with an ERA of 4.09 and gave away 10 hits, seven runs, one walk, two homers and seven earned runs
on his 90 pitches.
Game 3 – May 8: Tampa Bay Rays 5 – Baltimore Orioles 3
During the final game of the series, Orioles lost 5-3. Rays’ centre-fielder B.J. Upton shined as he had four RBIs and went 2-for-4 with an average of .260. Rays’ starter, Wade Davis pitched five innings and allowed four hits, three runs and three earned
runs including three strike-outs.
Orioles were able to chip in only three runs in the series finale and failed to avoid a clean sweep against the Rays. Brad Bergesen pitched just over four innings and gave away five runs, nine hits, five earned runs and two walks on his 85 pitches. However,
a decent team effort kept the Rays on top against the Orioles throughout the series.
