MLB Season Review: Washington Nationals beat New York Mets 2-1 in three-game series
National League’s New York Mets and Washington Nationals battled it out in a thrilling three game series. Nationals did a brilliant job as they sealed a 2-1 victory in this series after defeating the Mets convincingly. Nationals have had a remarkable season
so far as they got an acceptable Win-Loss record during the beginning of the regular season.
Let us take a brief summary of these thrilling games:
Game 1 – April 8: Washington Nationals 6 – New York Mets 2
Nationals directed a 6-2 win in the first game, as Jordan Zimmermann was incredible with his pitching. He threw just over five respective innings with an ERA of 3.18 and struck-out four batters in the Nationals victory. Speaking to reporters, Zimmermann
said, “I was battling pretty much all day.”
On the other side, Mets’ batters were able to add only two runs right through the complete game. R.A. Dickey pitched well for the Mets but that was not enough to steal a win for his team. He was able to strike-out three batters during his 97 pitches and
gave away five walks, six hits, three runs, no home-run and three earned runs with an ERA of 2.45.
Game 2 – April 9: Washington Nationals 4 – New York Mets 8
In the second game, Mets outclassed the Nationals by 8-4. Mets’ starter, Chris Capuano pitched the ball in accurate line but was expensive as he threw six innings and allowed seven hits with an ERA of 6.75. Capuano struck-out eight batters on his 97 pitches.
Nationals’ manager Jim Riggleman said, “We had opportunities to add on to what little lead we had, and Capuano made the necessary pitches to get out of the inning and shut us down.”
Washington was shaky with the bat and added just four runs until the end of the game. Tom Gorzelanny had an insecure day with the ball as he pitched just over five innings with an ERA of 8.44 and surrendered four hits with two walks on his 98 pitches. Gorzelanny
struck-out eight batters.
Game 3 – April 10: Washington Nationals 7 – New York Mets 3
During last game of the series, Mets lost 7-3. Nationals’ first baseman Adam LaRoche shined as he had two walks and went 1-for-3 with an average of .194. Riggleman said, “If we can get into the sixth and seventh innings, we really feel good about our ballclub.”
Mets’ batters yielded only three runs in the series finale. Chris Young pitched seven innings for Mets and gave away one run, one hit, one earned run and two walks on his 108 pitches. However, a tremendous team effort gave the Nationals the series win against
the struggling Mets.
