MLB Team Outlook: Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies are having a bizarre season. Although placed third in the National League West Division, the Rockies are 11 games behind leaders San Francisco Giants and seven games behind second-placed Arizona Diamondbacks. The Colorado Rockies are
above the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres who are marred with all sorts of problems this season.
The Rockies have a win-loss record of 48-54 but this could have been much superior only if they had played strong on Sundays. The team has played 16 games on Sundays and has managed just two wins. These two wins came on the first two Sundays of the season
after which the club has faced 14 consecutive defeats on Sunday games. They have a poor 2-14 record playing on Sunday and if this is the suit for the season, the Rockies will struggle in trying to improve on their current standing.
Rockies started strongly after the All-Star break with two consecutive wins against the Milwaukee Brewers including a shut-out. However, this success was not long-lived and they had to settle with a 2-2 series result against the Brewers.
The Rockies again had a chance to defeat the strong Atlanta Braves with two consecutive wins after a loss in the first game, but the Braves held their nerves to draw the series at 2-2.
Colorado has not won a single series after the break and is now currently on a three-game losing streak. This lacklustre showing has compelled the Rockies on selling players this season. Ubaldo Jimenez, Huston Street, Matt Belisle, Rafael Betancourt, Ty
Wigginton and Seth Smith are likely to switch uniforms and might not be on the Rockies’ roster when the next season begins.
Seth Smith has been impressive with the bat but lack of support has not helped his cause. He is nearing 100 hits for the season, currently sitting at 91, with 43 runs already in his account. He is batting at an average of .289 which is quiet inspiring. The
Rockies might spell trouble if they allow him to change his team.
Troy Tulowitzki has been smashing the ball brilliantly this season. The short-stop has amassed 19 home-runs so far and is just one shy of completing 50 runs this season. Troy leads the RBIs for the Rockies with 67 to his name and slugging percentage of .501
is best among the players who have played 50 or more games this season for the Rockies.
Ty Wigginton has been decent till now with 38 runs and 71 hits. He has also been among the home-runs with 13 smashed so far. However, with all the talks about his transfer, he may not show the required enthusiasm in the future games.
One player who has not been rewarding for the Rockies this season is Jason Giambi. Although his slugging percentage is .625 for the season, he has played in just 48 games and collected 16 runs in total. Out of the 16, 10 have come as home-runs and if he
had played in more games, who knows the Rockies might have been in competition for the top notch.
The Rockies now have five relatively easy games and can improve their record if they manage to win all five. They have two more games with the Los Angeles Dodgers before a three-game series against the San Diego Padres.
However, having lost the first game of the series to the Dodgers, it will be tricky to predict success for the Rockies. With Clayton Kershaw starting for the Dodgers in the next game, the Rockies should be ready for a tough outing.
