MLB Team Outlook: New York Mets
The New York Mets have not been in prime form this season and their fourth position in the National League East division, just above last-placed Florida Marlins explains just about how dreary they have been in 2011.
Their lacklustre performance this season has been highlighted in their home fixtures where they have managed to win just 25 of the total 60 games played which, by any horizon, is not an impressive record. However, they have given an enhanced performance
in their games on the road and their winning percentage has persistently remained above the .500 mark.
The Mets have a strong batting unit and is rated 12th in the Majors this season but their pitching’ staff has not complimented their batting line-up. Their bull-pen is rated 24th out of a total of 30 teams and this ranking does not
come good to the eye.
Jonathon Niese has been their best pitcher in terms of wins this season with just 11 to his credit thus far. He has also struck-out the most batters for the Mets this year and his current tally of 132 does not match the highest achievers on the circuit this
season. Their bull-pen has leaked a total of 584 runs thus far in the campaign and it would be vital for them to improve this area when they come back for their next campaign.
The Mets’ bull-pen has not impressed on the whole. Their closer Francisco Rodriguez has been a standout performer for his team this season, saving 23 games so far. This number, however, could have been much higher if the batting line-up had supported the
pitchers by adding those extra runs.
Their batters, statistically speaking, have added total of 565 runs this season which is 19 less than what they have given away. To formulate a winning strategy, any team must ensure that the run differential is not in deficit. The Mets have failed to keep
it positive this season but will surely make a strong comeback in the next season when they start afresh.
One particular reason for their ordinary showing this season has been the prolonged injury of their shortstop and top hitter Jose Reyes. He is undoubtedly the best batter in the Mets line-up with the best batting average and the most runs among his team-mates.
He is currently placed on the 15-day disabled list and it still remains unsure as to when will he return to the roster. He will be central to the Mets’ planning for the next season and can act as a solid foundation around which the Mets can build a strong
line-up.
The Mets have failed to improve on their form even in the second half of the season. Their last 12 games have not helped their cause either. They have won just two of their previous 12 games which include a three-game whitewash by the Arizona Diamondbacks
and a similar result against the Milwaukee Brewers. Their performance did not spike against the lowly-ranked San Diego Padres either and the Mets have managed to split their six games with the Padres.
This season would serve as a good ground for the Mets to experiment various combinations to come up with a solid line-up next season. They would seriously want to reduce the gulf between success and themselves.
