MLB extends reach to tornado victims, dedicates Game 7 of World Series to those affected – MLB News
The Tornado Relief initiative witnessed its overwhelming height on Friday, October 28 as Game 7 of the 107th World Series was dedicated to the cause. This is essentially aimed at community outreach whose beginning was made during the ongoing Series
first four games.
The fans were asked and encouraged to generously extend their help, donating to Heart-to-Heart International and Habitat for Humanity.
Spelling out the purpose of the Tornado Relief initiative, the commissioner Bud Selig said it was primarily to reach out to the victims of the horrible tragedy.
"We are a social institution, and it isn't that we should be doing these things, we ought to be privileged, and we are privileged to do it," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "So we are working with them in great detail ... [in] providing assistance to the victims
of this horrible tragedy."
On May 22 of this year, one of the deadliest tornadoes in the history of America wrought havoc in the region. As tornadoes continued to wreck devastation, 162 people died leaving several other wounded and destroying thousands of homes.
The tornado that hit the nearby area was where Joplin Community brought together all relief agencies and volunteers. Major League Baseball also came forward to help the victims of the tragedy, considered to be one of the worst in recent times.
Not only that, the tornadoes prior to that, hitting certain areas in April perished towns, resulting in the death of more than 400 people.
This gesture of Major League Baseball received attention and appreciation of the people from across the region.
"It was just amazing," said Jake Young, a 12-year-old "all-position" player on the team. "There's no real other way to describe it. This is so cool."
The MLB players trust had already succeeded in generating almost two hundred thousand dollars so far that has helped many of the victims during their time of desperate need. Heart-to-Heart is one such project that continues to reach out to the people afflicted
by this disaster. MLB works with many organisations for community outreach and helping others in times of need.
