MLB news: Alex Rodriguez’s record RBI doesn’t prevent the Yankees from sinking
The Baltimore Orioles have been on the receiving end of defeats lately and their visit to the Yankee stadium wasn’t thought to be easy for the team. Having lost the last match against the Tampa bay Rays, the side was looking for a brighter shine on fate. Fortunately, luck prevailed and they felled the New York Yankees in style in front of a crowd of 46,103 fans. Brian Matusz provided the win, as he struck out 4 hitters in his 106 pitches and allowed 5 hits, 3 runs and 2 walks in his 6 innings of play.
The Yankees however, were a ballclub to face a harsh time on the field as they went in for their 2nd consecutive defeat in the week. Allan James Burnett was the culprit, and he faced his 4th defeat in his last 5 outings. He conceded 7 hits, 4 runs and 4 walks in his 7 innings of play. He only managed to strike out 5 hitters on 104 pitches. Alex Rodriguez made history, as he passed Babe Ruth, Jimmie Fox and Lou Gehrig on a 100 runs batted in (RBIs) in 13 seasons. The strong smasher achieved the mark for the 14th time and registered his 13th consecutive effort.
The Orioles started the play, and it didn’t take long for the team to clamp down on Burnett’s weak pitching. The first run came in the top 3rd and Josh Bell was responsible for the scoring. He started off the innings when he doubled to the centre. Brian Roberts’ single to the left got him to third base. All it took, next, was Felix Pie’s grounder shot to double play. The hit got the Baltimore side their first run of the match, and immediately put the Yanks on the back foot.
The lead didn’t last long, as the Yankees got back in to the fray through a recent returnee from the disabled list. It was the bottom 4th and Brian Matusz retired Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira off the plate. That’s eventually what brought Alex Rodriguez out from the dugout. The maestro came out and dealt a screaming 429-feet homer to the left centre of the field to bring up the 1st run of the Yankees. Scores were now even, and the action was again locked on even scores.
However, the Orioles took the lead again. This time Cesar Izturis was the hitter to score, and his run didn’t take long to come by in the top 5th. He came in after Corey Patterson flied out to centre. He started off with a double smash to the right. Brian Roberts then came on and released Izturis for the second Baltimore run, when he singled to the left. This brought in 2 runs for the last ranking ball club of the East Division. This wouldn’t be the end of the scoring initiative, as the team scored again in the top 6th. Pie was the player to score, and he started his bid for the run with a single to the centre. He then moved up to the second, when Nick Markakis was walked to the first base. A wild pitch by Burnett then, got him to third base. And he finally scored when Matt Wieters gave a sacrifice hit to the left.
The Yankees however, levelled the playing field again through some good hitting in the bottom 6th. Swisher was the first scorer, as he started his move to the third base with a walk, a single by Teixeira and a wild pitch by Matusz. From there, Alex Rodriguez made his presence count, as he hit a sacrifice fly to the right and got the team their second run of the match. Teixeira who was on third, following the previous hit, was the next scorer. He got through for the equalizer, when Robinson Cano singled to the left.
With both teams on even score lines, the race was onto the oust the other, and it didn’t take long as the underdogs got to the goal first in decent style, as Brian Roberts got his 3rd RBI of the game, driving Patterson through the gates with a single to the right. The score was now 4 Baltimore – 3 New York. There were no further runs scored, and the Yanks faced their second defeat of the season as a result.
