MLB officials dejected on Derek Jeter’s choice to miss 2011 All-Star Game – MLB News
New York Yankees’ short-stop, Derek Jeter had to face many questions about not playing in an All-Star game. Some MLB officials were also not happy on the Jeter’s decision as being the Yankees captain, he had to play the big game and lead their side.
He earned fame by achieving a milestone of 3000 hits in the first half of the regular season. The Yankees’ team officials accepted the choice of Jeter as they wanted him to perform well in the second half of the season. According to them, the next series
will be more valuable than that game, although it was a big game.
The former team-mates of Jeter also disagreed with his decision and had a view that Jeter should have to play the All-Star game because it would be helpful for his captaincy. One of his last season’s team-mate, Lance Berkman said, "I don't think it's my
place to speak for others. But for me, personally, if you get selected to be here you have an obligation. You gotta be here. If you can go, you gotta go.”
New York Mets’ right-fielder, Carlos Beltran, who got a chance to play the All-Star game, had a view that Jeter should play the big game of top players. Speaking to reporters, he said, “I do believe, as a ballplayer, if you have no injuries, you should be
here. The fans are the ones that vote for you and want to see you here.”
The executive director of the Players’ Association, Michael Weiner also amazed on the Jeter’s decision as he thought that Jeter was more loyal with his play. Jeter was fit unlike some of the players such as Jose Reyes and Alex Rodriguez, who were unable
to become the part of the All-Star roster due to serious injuries.
The Phillies’ chairman, Bill Giles said, “I think it's too bad that Jeter in particular is not here, because of what he accomplished over the weekend.”
The 37-year-old Jeter played his MLB debut game for the Yankees on May 29, 1995. They assigned him a short-stop position from the early time as he was a good fielder as well. His starting with the Yankees was not great as he suffered a minor injury during
the Arizona Fall League and went on the disabled list.
Jeter continued his exemplary form during all the seasons and gave his team some exciting wins also. During 2005, he attained the Number two spot in the American League by posting 122 runs and raised his batting average to .394. He became the main player
in the Yankees’ roster because he had the abilities to play even the tricky throws of the pitchers also.
In 2010, Jeter won the Gold Glove award also due to his impressive play.
