MLB update: Eight Minor League inductees get invitation to join Astros’ spring training
Major League Baseball is enjoying the offseason term at the moment and as ball clubs in both the National League and the American League look to capitalize on their free time, managers are making moves off the field in the interests
of the club. Restructuring is becoming a common practice in the rosters and before spring training starts, the idea seems to resonate well.
The Houston Astros recently announced they will be inviting 8 players over to the spring training session that is scheduled to start soon, within the next three months. The players were recently snubbed in a contract-based agreement
from various minor league teams. Five of those players were part of the Houston side in 2010 and they will be bringing in a potential to groom into future team stars.
Three right–handers will be coming in to the training session if they agree to accept the invitation. Casey Fien originates from the Detroit Organization and he was an active member of the Tigers side. He featured twice for the
team in his role as a relief pitcher. Fernando Rodriguez is a 26 year old and he played for the Triple-A side, Salt Lake, under the Los Angele Angles contract. He won four games for the side and lost six, while posting an Earning Runs Average (ERA) of 5.92
in 31 games.
Ross Wolf is the last new inductee to be given an invitation. The relief pitcher comes from the Oakland Athletics’ having made 11 appearances for the team, winning and losing no encounter in the process. He registered an ERA of
4.26 for the year. The other players in the team who have worked with the Houston Astros include right-hander Jose Valdez, catcher Brian Esposito, left-hander Douglas Arguello, infielders Anderson Hernandez and Oswaldo Navarro.
Many see the Houston Astros making a move towards a better future where the young crop of players are expected to come out and contribute more to the team’s progression in the long run. The task may seem difficult but the intention
is clear. The move can be seen as way to drive out high cost alternatives and bring in good measure of players with the aptitude to perform in the long run. Many judge the free agents as pricey options and with the financial woes increasing over the years
this may seem as the best time to invest in young blood.
