MLB’s Alex Cora looking to take part in 2011 Caribbean Series – MLB News
It looks like Alex Cora for Major League Baseball is looking to take part in the 2011 Caribbean Series. Major teams participating in the Series are looking at him to take part in their team for the competition.
Currently Cora is a free agent and that leaves him open to participate with any team or league that he feels like. He has played regularly in Puerto Rico’s Winter League since 1996 and also participated in the Caribbean Series numerous times.
Cora had a decent 2010 season in MLB as he played for the Texas Rangers and the New York Mets. He had 20 RBIs with an average of .210. Currently he has been signed on to a Minor League contract with the Washington Nationals.
Alex discussed his participation the Caribbean Series and said, "I just came down here to play, and it's the first time I started the season without a [Major League] job, and instead of making it a showcase, it was something more. From the get-go, the goal
was to get here. Last year, we finished second and we wanted to come back”.
Many MLB players play during the Winter League in Puerto Rico to stay competitive and in shape for the regular season. Most MLB teams encourage their players to play in the Latin American leagues to gain some much needed match experience against some top
players. MLB has a large amount of player from Latin America and most have a lot experience playing in the Caribbean Series. Teams like Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic often bring players in from MLB to be a part of their line-up
during the competition.
Thus, the fans and the players get a chance to enjoy themselves as the Caribbean Series provides the perfect opportunity to promote baseball in the Latin American countries and build an enormous potential fan-base for MLB and its players. The Series also
allows future talented players to be seen by certain member of MLB for the possibility of making it in the big leagues one day.
