Real Salt Lake shot-stopper, Nick Rimando, has been awarded a one year contract extension with MLS side Real Salt Lake after a great performance in the 2010 MLS Regular Season.
Rimando did deserve to be awarded a contract extension. For 2 years, he has been a stellar presence in the RSL goal. In the 2009 MLS Season, Rimando’s great performances helped Real Salt Lake reach the 2009 MLS Cup and last season, he recorded the second
lowest goals against average of all time in the history of MLS.
His stellar performances were being noticed by the general manager of Real Salt Lake, Garth Lagerwey, and after a series of contract manoeuvres from the club this week, they chose to extend Rimando’s contract at RSL that will keep him at the club till 2013.
Lagerwey said that it wasn’t the kind of deal that they should have done but they wanted to send out a message to fans that they will always reward players, who have been doing well for the club.
“We wanted to do it because we thought it sends the right message to our group: that we reward the guys who do well for us and we’d like those guys to stay with us”.
Rimando knew that he would have to reach a compromise with the club if both him and the club want to achieve what they desire, that is, keeping the core of the franchise together.

And Rimando also believes that he has now started reaching his peak and is hopeful that he will have a few more good seasons with the MLS franchise.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Will-Johnson-c36842, Rimando’s team-mate, was also a recipient of a contract extension believes that it is another good move made by the club and indicated that Real Salt Lake management is looking to keep its’ best players.
“It’s exciting that this club has put so much faith in this core group of guys and rewarded us for what we brought to the table over the last couple of years”, said Johnson.
The recent move has indicated that Real Salt Lake is planning for the long-term by also acquiring http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Álvaro-Saborío-c5302 and extending the loan deal of Paulo Jr.
Lagerwey said that he is not looking to bring in marquee players or designated players but is very much interested in keeping the current players as it will build a strong RSL roster in the near future.
