MLS SuperDraft 2011: D.C United should bring in a striker
Another page on the offseason renovation of D.C United will begin this Thursday in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. A couple of moves made by D.C United this week indicate which position the club should be concentrating on when their 3rd overall pick
arrives.
This Tuesday, D.C United traded forward, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Adam-Cristman-c3520 to L.A Galaxy and, although the striker wasn’t ever going to play a major role in the 2011 MLS Regular Season, his departure has left D.C United with only 2 main forwards.
After adding defender, Rodrigo Brasesco from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Uruguay-c3035, it is clear that D.C United’s main focus should be on picking a striker, given that the team's problem area seems to be the attack, which was evident when they were declared the lowest scoring team in
MLS last season, with only 21 goals.
It is not clear which player D.C United might benefit from the most. It may come down to Pennsylvania State forward, Corey Hertzog and Will Bruin of Indiana. Both youngsters are leaving school and have had strong junior football years.
Corey Hertzog finished the college season as the country’s top scorer with 20 goals, but Will Bruin seems more of a player who is ready to play in the MLS in almost every aspect. The youngster already stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 192 pounds. His physical
characteristics, along with great speed, make him a good bargain for any MLS side. Owing to his imposing presence on the field, he can also be helpful in creating space for D.C United strikers, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Josh-Wolff-c19540.
Corey Hertzog, on the other hand, is a proven clinical finisher, but hasn’t quite the imposing physique like Bruin.
The duo, who are about to leave college, participated in the 2011 MLS Combine this weekend, as assistant coaches, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pat-Onstad-c29217, along with Dave Kasper, General Manager of D.C, joined head coach, Ben Olsen in order to evaluate the two young
strikers.
Perry Kitchen and Darlington Nagbe are widely considered as two of the top options available; they might still be in the draft picks when the turn of pick no. 3 comes.
Apart from this, D.C United have the option of trading down. By trading, they will be able to add a player that is already playing in the MLS and can even acquire some allocation money after going to a lower spot in the first round of the 2011 Super Draft.
The trading option might be advisable, but Ben Olsen is hesitant to go for it and says that there are some really exciting players available in the draft and he would not want to give up his team’s say on the picks.
D.C United have been given should be looking to replenish their attacking stock as they really need to put on a strong show in the 2011 Regular MLS season, after the humiliation last season.
