Question:

MMA's has some big gambles coming up?

There are two big fights coming up that could take MMA a step in the wrong direction.

Silva vs. Irvin. Silva is p-4-p the best fighter in the world and is now fighting James Irvin. Irvin has big knockout power but to the casual fan he is not a household name. If a "no name" were to knock out the best fighter in the world, it will go down as a horible move by Dana White.

Fedor vs. Sylvia. Fedor is the most dominant fighter in the world. Now Sylvia is not just some push over, but he is not the fighter everyone wants to see go against Fedor. Everyone wants to see Fedor vs. Couture. But if Sylvia beats Fedor, the Fedor Couture fight will not have as much hype and will lose viewers.

Now if these fights go the way everyone thinks they'll go they will be great for the sport. Fedor knocks off a former UFC Champ and Silva beats a LHW fighter. But both of these fights could end in an upset and set the sport back.

What do you think?

  1. I don`t think that in the event both fights end in an upset it will put the sport back.

For me this sport is about the figths not the fighters. There will always be a loser and a winner in each fight, and whats the purpose of fighting if the guys don `t have a decent possibility to win.

From the comercial viewpoint maybe the Silva fight could be a big gamble. As you say if he looses that could set him back a little bit. But it will also create more opportunities if he can manage suscesfully his carrer after that (Couture can prove that you can lose and still be in top of your game and your carreer).

The Fedor fight is a win - win for everybody:

He needs to pratice with some real competition.

The Couture fight is nowhere near to be a sure thing.

Fedor is one of (if not) the best fighters in the world and we have another chance to see him.

Tim Sylvia is very known in the USA and Fedor needs him to get to more fans. (More fans more money to everyone)

Ps. Sorry for my english is not my mother tongue.... and by the way im a mma fan ( not a pride or ufc crazy)

  2. Fedor vs. Tim is not a gamble. It's more of what we need to see from Fedor.

Silva vs. Irvin though...it's a HUGE gamble. It makes no sense to do it. It will not help anything. The only thing it truly does is block Rich Franklin's move back to 205.

  3. what about when the giants beat the patriots..ill bet you that didnt get set back

  4. If you're a big fan of the fighter you may not like it, but if you aren't then it really doesn't matter who wins or loses. I'm a fan of the sport and I like just watching fights. Sure I have my favortie fighters, but I don't let a loss get me down. Fighters win and fighters lose. It happens all the time and the world keeps on turning. Just look at what happened to MMA when Chuck, the biggest name in the sport at the time, lost his title to Rampage. Nothing. The world didn't end and everyone moved on. Even if Silva and Fedor both lose it won't hurt anything. Fedor will fight again and still be considered one of the greatest fighters of all time and Anderson will either take another fight at 205 or keep on fighting at 185. So try not to worry about it.

  5. This is MMA, it's a sporting event.  Upsets are bound to happen (see Tyson vs Douglas, Serra vs St.Pierre 1, Big Brown not winning the Triple Crown) but like joecarr said, the universe did not end, the sun rose the next day, and a billion people in China didn't give a d**n.
