What do you think an acceptable substitute for MMA/Kickboxing trunks would be? How about swimming trunks? They offer quite a bit of support.

  1. Board shorts can be great, but be careful they dont have sharp metal buttons/loop/rivets on them.  any short will, honestly.  i've torn a pair of "MMA" shorts the first time i rolled in them, but have a pair of wal-mart cotton workout shorts that have lasted a while. just make sure they don't constrict your movement, have any stitching/velcro/ect. that may irritate you or your training partner, or will become see though when wet. Check out this website for a cool pair of hemp shorts http://www.dsmma.com/html/shorts.html

  2. I use soccer shorts, they are cheap and are perfect for fighting. They don't restrict movement at all.

  3. Do a search for "board shorts" and you should be able to find some less expensive shorts.

I use Local Motion swim trunks for MMA classes. They work just fine. ($20-25 per pair). I found some off of Overstock.com

Brawler brand is reasonably priced. ($25-35)

Sinister, Tapout, Sprawl and Combat Sports are all good brands but you could be shelling out $45 to $50+ per pair.

    Good Luck
