MMA technique question?

I always wondered why an mma fighter would stay on top of a guy in turtle guard instead of taking his back. all the UFC fights i see, i see them staying in this position punching while the other guy is in turtle. i find it easy to transition to turtle to guard, and i think it would be much more effective to get in your hooks and then hook him in the temples when u have more control on his back, and he may transition mount. anyone know why?

  1. It depends on the guys turtle guard. If the guy has a good turtle guard, you sometimes take a risk of getting to high, or not getting hooks deep enough. Then your opponent can scramble up and shake you off.

Also, if you have a ground and pound style. It feels much safer to hold the guy in turtle guard and land body and head shots. Even knees to the ribs.

Did you see what GSP did to Matt Serra last fight? Its not a bad position.

  2. i agree with you i can't figure it out i usually try and put my hooks in and get a rear naked or either flatten em out and pound them into submission
