My son had a fever for four days and coughing for the past week. I took him to the dr and he said the virus just has to run its course. okay well now all this flem is making my 7 year old cough and because he is so young he cant "hack" it up. so he cant control his coughing and he is throwing up everything he eats or drinks so I am just giving him little bits of gatorade and water at a time. First I didnt want him to throw up but now I think it is a good idea to get that "c**p" out of his system. The flem.

Am I right or do you have any other suggestions?

Like maybe a expectorant for kids??

Thanks a bunch!

really!

  1. Will a Benadryl dry it up so that he can rest and keep food down?

He needs to go back to the doctor.  It may have progressed to Bronchitis or pneaumonia.

  2. Definetly an expectorant and some mucinex for kids will help too. Also, put a humidifier in the room that he is in, or if you dont have one have him sit in the bathroom with the door closed for 15 minutes with the shower running on hot only, for steam. this will help the mucus get watery and "drip" out. Have hime do this several times a day (you could buy him a cool comic book or something special like that for him to look at while doing it). throwing up will only empty his stomach contents, not get rid of the mucus. hope he feels better

  3. Doesn't sound like a virus to me, sounds like bronchitis.  My oldest daughter gets it at least once a year and she presents the same symptoms.  I'd find another doctor for a 2nd opinion.

  4. Actually, like what you said, they say it's better for him to keep coughing it up so he'll get better faster.  Obviously, in order for him to get some rest, and expectorant might help.  If he is willing, have him put his head over a bowl of hot water with a towel on top of his head.  All the steam will help him clear out his system.  His nose will probably drip and he'll cough up a lot of phlegm but it really helps.  It's a little gross, just to warn you.  Also, for when he needs a break from coughing, Vick's Vapor Rub works wonders.

  5. I would take him to a pediatric who knows what they are doing because that is not normal. What you are doing right now is a good thing. With him not eating that is not good and throwing up ewww not good. I would honestly take him back and get a secong opinion. I am not a mom but study pediatrics so take him to a pediatric again! It sounds like more than a virus that is getting him down sounds like broncitus.

  6. Stop giving him gatorade.  There are a lot of sugars in it.  Stick with water, or pedialyte frozen pops.  It sounds like his symptoms are getting worse.  If so, get him in to see the doctor again and insist they check to see if he has pnuemonia or anything other that "just a virus".  Give him small bites of dry toast and plenty of rest.  Good luck!!

  7. Getting him to throw up is not a wise choice.

You can lay him across a pillow and gently hit his back with your palm and wrist part to loosen up any flem, it will be easier for him to cough it up. Bless his heart and you too! You have got to be exhausted. Please keep an ear on his breathing, listen closely for any wheezing in the chest. it's easier to hear wheezing if you put your ear on his back and ask him to breath, if any wheezing..Go in the bathroom and run the shower on hot until its real steamy and sit with him for 20 min. If the wheezing doesn't go away... take him in to see a doc. or E.R. Please.

  8. Mucinex or Robitussin.

  9. Yes, I believe you right - get all the yukky stuff out. sips of water and hopefully then soft boiled eggs and toast and more food until he is back to normal. Horrible times for him and you, but hopefully he is almost over the worst, poor chicken.

Please ignore negroluv - stupid person clearly has no children he cares about/knows of yet! waste of space.

  10. I had this illness for 2 weeks straight, like the doctor said, it does run its own course. While i was sick i just laid in my bed or on the couch and watched tv. My mom would give me tons of fluids and juices. I know you want to do everything you can to help, but its best to just let him rest it up on his own!
