MONZA sweeps Volleys in quarter-final match of 2012 CEV Volleyball Cup
A quarter-final match of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Cup took place recently in the Italian city of Monza. The two teams that locked horns together in the competition were the host squad of Acqua Paradiso MONZA as well as the BERLIN Recycling Volleys.
It did not take long for the match to decide a victor as the home team was able to assert themselves and bag a win after making a clean sweep over their opponents.
The first set saw the two teams challenge each other significantly but as the frame progressed, MONZA was able to come out on the winning side because the Volleys fell to making errors. The loss of the opening set got the spirits of the Volleys down while
MONZA started the frame oozing with confidence.
As a result, MONZA was able to smother its opponents in the second set of the frame. The loss of the first two sets enabled the Volleys to rally themselves together which enabled them to step up their game and put on a good show in order to avoid a clean
sweep.
Despite the fact that the Volleys put in a valiant effort, they did not succeed in turning things in their favour as the MONZA sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores, 25-20, 25-12 and 33-31.
Urpo Sivula of the losing team expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match reached its close, “We expected a tough match and so it was. They have a very good team; we did our best and we hope to display
a better performance for the return coming up next week. It is an advantage to play the next game in Berlin but we know we will have to play our best from the start up to the end of the match.”
On the other hand, the Argentinean player Facundo Conte who was also the Most Valuable Player of the match shared his views in this manner, “They are a strong side even though they did not start so well tonight. We easily won the first two sets, then we
slowed down a bit in the third but were still able to bring it home.”
