Im 23 and have a 6 yr old daughter, i will be finished my University Degree (BA Business and Human Resource Management) in 3 years and after that i will be doing my Masters and CIPD at the same time so that i become "Chartered" ... i want to take my qualifications and start a new career in Connecticut USA, preferably Washington Depot... my mum says property is cheaper as houses out there are made of wood and there is no healthcare unless you have insurance and you cannot get insurance if you have pre existing conditions...

baring that in mind - what are the pro's and cons of moving from here (UK North East) to there????

  1. The USA is the best country

con... we eat everything with our fingers. I met a lady from UK that did not like that about us.

  2. nj gemini... im her sister can i come hahaha x can i come tam u cant leave me!!!!! lol id say go for it but... i call your room hahah xx

  3. You can get medical insurance with a pre existing condition in the US your simply have to carry the insurance for 2 years to be covered for the pre existing condition. This is to stop people from taking out insurance only when they need it, which would collapse the system.

Real Estate is cheaper in the US Conn. is more expensive than most states. People are far less excepting of government control here than they are in England and most question government more here than there. people will love your accent and find it charming here.

BTW unless you have a major illness your medical bills will be far less than insurance especially at your age, and taxes are lower here at the moment which may change after the next election.

  4. PROS:- The accent will be a hit, the cost of fuel is cheaper then England even though they complain, its still 3 times cheaper then the UK. If you have a lot of savings and money it will be doubled because of the value of the pound, almost double the dollar. The weather is better in summer. There are no chavs in the USA. You dont have to leave the USA to go on holiday as every state is different.

CONS:- They drive everywere, in the UK we walk to the local shops, they dont mind driving for 30 minutes. The beer is worse, its weak, goes flat quicker and you have to drink more then you would in the UK to get the same effects. You wont get a decent cup of tea, they prefer their tea cold. The weathers worse in winter then in the UK, your gonna struggle to find a decent sunday roast! Their education isnt as good as the UK, ask the majority of Americans the capital for even the most well known country's and they will struggle to give you the correct answer. The TV is worse, commercials every 5 minutes!

other then that have a great time and good luck with your move, im going to Canada for a year this winter, hopefully i can stay a lot longer then  a year

  5. Stay away from the NE....high crime, expensive and infested with Liberals

  6. People say the united states is the best country in the world, but then they ***** about the prices of gas and what the president is doing. Its all hypocritical. Its has good education, but if you compare U.S education to Japan. Japan wins with out a doubt. There more freedom in the U.S so you can do what ever you want, but at the moment. The U.S is very expensive. Also it depends on where you live in the U.S, because not all housing is cheap here. Example. Living in California. you can go over there and buy a 300,000 dollar house and not get that much sq ft, But lets say you take that money and you go down to the south you could buy a house with more sq ft, and bigger. But the only con the U.S offer is Freedom, everything else your going have to earn. Example Even if you get a BA in business and human Resource management. The company you are working for or even in the U.S it could be invalid and you would have to go to school all over again, because they could see you living in another country. As different. Example my sister lives in Michigan. If she got her hair/nail license there. and moved down to Georgia. She would have to get her license again in Georgia. Also you should look into american Politic seeing that a new president is about to be elected there will be alot of things changing in the U.S.

  7. Well crime is bad. The NE is full of elitist. You will not get to know the real USA if all you do is stay in the NE. Travel the US and see where you might like to live.

  8. Only pros. The US is the best country of the World.

    Greetings from Casper, Wyoming, USA!

  9. stick to the north east if not for you for ya bairn

  10. The insurance can be a big deal in the States. If you get insurance through your employer the company that carries the policy can vary the pre-existing  conditions clause, they can be included immediately, after a waiting period of usually a year, or be waived if you can prove you had insurance before taking the position, depends on the policy, but you would still be insured for everything else, but it's not free, there are usually co-pays, any where from $10 - $50 to visit a doctor, it can be quite complicated and quite different from what you are use to. Saying all that there are great opportunities in the US, and broadening your horizons is always a good thing. Conn is not cheap, although there are areas that are less expensive. Living in New York State or Rhode Island and commuting in may be an option for you.

  11. 1st off who ever gave you that information is miss-informed.

    1)  Being "chartered" in England has no meaning in the US. You would have to get re-certified in the US.

    2) Property values have absolutely nothing to do with how the housing is constructed, but on where the location is. A stone 4 bedroom, 4 bath house on 2 acres in Oklahoma may cost $400,000. A wood frame home of 3 bedrooms one bath on 1/4 acre in Greenwich, Ct. would cost $1,500,000.

    3) The vast majority of US citizens have health insurance through their place of employment. Since they are group policies, pre-existing conditions have no bearing on anything.

Now for reality, if you want to work in the US, there are 2 ways of going about it. One green card, the other work VISA. Unlike Canada, the US has a diversity program for immigration. Since you are from the UK, you are ineligible for the Green Card lottery (there are too many Brits working in the US and the green card lottery will allow others the opportunity to work in the US). The other way would be to get a work VISA. To get a work VISA, you need to be sponsored by a company. The "easiest" way to do this would be to get a job in the UK with a US based company, or get a job with a UK company with US offices and then after a while look for an internal transfer.

I would suggest you stop "listening to people" and find out the correct information on your own.

  12. You get away from the bad weather. That has to be good thing.

  13. Pro's - the weather.

Cons - the average american is as thick as a brick and very gulible.

crime is worse than UK. The working hours are almost dickensian. I could go on but won't. Stay in the n/e.

  14. Well you'll never get to see me.

  15. TAM MY DEAR, I do not think I can explained to you in two words because you are not one who will be coming here to do HOUSE work

so altho I know that you are an intelligent young lady but it will take a little explanation  for you. First is your child's Education, but since you could give him a lot of that it would not be too bad for her, because the Education here  comparison to the U K. & as a matter of fact, any where else it is inferior here, for instant what your Daughter has gone thought & pass, that is what she will be getting & if you do not care full you will see her starting to be restless & she may not even explained to you that she is not been challenged in School with her school work &

then she started to fall by the way side but like I say that would not go

for you & her. NOW to you now. In a short sentence what I could tell

you to do, the best thing  you should do is to spend your holiday here

spend @ least a couple or a few month here checking out the place

before you make that huge step with your child, because even your degrees that you will be coming here with when you come, you will not

be able to just jump in a job any & every where with your degrees with

with out going back to college to get there paper here between you & I

it is like a scuttled brain washed, is like any where else Diploma is not

good enough for them so you should come here with an open mind and

look around before you packed & leave for good.

By the way do you have any one here? The part that you say about the houses, You are correct, so if you want to come & buy a few of them as an ANTROPANURE, Then you will be on the correct road as well nothing wrong with that but I hope you do your home work before

you packed up & leave OK? I am not far from Connecticut @ all I am in  New York, like they say it's just a short hop, skip & a jump form N Y.C. one HR. drive in car. I will leave you to think about all I have said to you and I am from North London, Stoke Newington to be direct.

BY  FOR  NOW. Take care of that PRENCESS

  16. Of course there is health care for people without insurance.  I am a nurse and over half of the patients in the hospital where I worked had no health insurance.  For the truly poor there are all kinds of programs like Medicaid to provide care.  And of course you can get health ins. if you have pre-existing conditions, esp. if you get it through your employment.  Sometimes you have to pay higher premiums or wait one year for those pre-existing conditions to be covered.  Now...to move to the U.S. you would need to apply to immigrate.  this means you need a very valuable skill to enter as a skilled worker.  If not, you have to apply through the diversity lottery program and U.K. citizens are not currently eligible for that...see articles and info below on immigration.
