Question:

MRI and cartilage piercings?

I have to get an MRI of my ankle in a few weeks and I just got two cartilage piercings a week ago. I really don't want to take them out because they are just now starting to feel better and don't hurt so much anymore.

If I have to take them out, is there something I can do to keep the holes open? It will be less than an hour that they're out.

Do I absolutely have to take them out? Last time I got an MRI (of my head) I was allowed to wear jeans with a metal zipper/buttons.

  1. I am assuming that your cartilage piercings are in your ears?  For a brain or even a neck MRI, they would need to be removed, as the can degrade the images.  But, for an ankle MRI, facial and ear piercings will not interfere with the exam.  This is very similar to your previous MRI.  The metal in your jeans did not interfere with the images of your head.  Body jewelry is non-ferrous, meaning it is not attracted to a magnet.  You can see this for yourself, by holding a refridgerator magnet to the jewelry.  It will not be attracted.

  2. You may be asked to take them out, so what I suggest doing is revisiting the piercer and explain to him/her the situation. They may be able to give you some advice as to what to do.
