  1. An MRI for the brain will bring you into the tunnel to mid-thigh. They'll attach a mirror onto a brace that fits around your head during the scan so you can see out & watch them inside their room, working on the computer. The brace is there to keep your head still, in order to get clear images. Try to relax as much as possible. Doctors may prescribe a muscle relaxer to make the experience easier. If you're nervous now, check into it. Some radiology buildings provide earphones with music to listen to- which makes it MUCH easier. Others give ear plugs to lessen the sound of the machine.

The tech's will talk with you along the way- telling you what to expect. They typically start with several short shots (taking about 2-3 minutes here & there), go into longer scans (5-7 minute intervals), and back to a couple of short ones. They may or may not bring you out near the end & inject dye, then do 2 or 3 more shorter shots.

  2. I've had  many MRI brain scans over the years.  Typically, they just had me slide in up to about my  waist or so.

This site can tell you a little more about what to expect on your first visit.  Also, they make "open MRI's" for people who do not like to be in enclosed spaces.
