Question:

MRI to detect breast cancer?

If a person has a breast lump and there are findings on a mammogram including calcifications, and the person is then sent for a breast MRI that is read as "inconclusive" , what is the likelihood of it being cancer? I realize that a biopsy is still needed, but it will take time to get that done. I am just trying to get an idea of what the odds are that it is breast cancer if the MRI is read as "inconclusive".

  1. Without being able to read the reports it is hard to tell, but it sounds like they suspect DCIS which is a noninvasive cancer.

  2. If the doctor thought it was cancer, you would have already had surgery.  When I was an anesthesia technician and a patient would have an abnormal mammogram, they were scheduled for a biopsy either that day or the next day.  They do not mess around with breast cancer.

So your chances are very slim.
