Wasim Akram, the former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 captain, is not impressed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s performances in recent times and advised the wicketkeeper/batsman to leave captaincy in at least one format of the game.
Dhoni was given the responsibility for the very first time in the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20 in 2007 in South Africa. The cricketer from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jharkhand-c800 impressed one and all with the sense of calmness he brought to the national team, winning the illustrious
tournament in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757.
He was later appointed as the skipper for all the three formats. The hard-hitting batsman is considered to be one of the most successful Indian skippers, having won the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Cricket World Cup 2011 at home and also helping his country become the number one
ranked Test team of the world for the very first time.
However, over the last 14 months, his leadership has been found wanting, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 earlier this year and also failed to qualify for the semi-final
of the World T20 for the third consecutive time.
Akram, who has been closely monitoring Indian cricket over the years, feels that being the captain in every version of the international sport is an extremely challenging task.
The great fast bowler expressed, "I am not surprised that questions are being raised about Mahendra Singh Dhoni's leadership skills after India failed to reach the semis of the World T20 for the third time in a row. There could be additional pressure on
him as a leader in all three formats of the game.”
The former cricketer from Lahore went one step ahead and asked Dhoni to give up captaincy in one of the three formats.
Talking about the wicketkeeper/batsman’s abilities as a player, Akram rates him among the game’s best lower-middle order batsmen.
"I think if he drops captaincy in one of the formats then he will be able to focus and enjoy his game more. I still feel he is one of the best players and finishers in limited overs cricket," he added.
