MSU stuns Golden Eagles in straight sets and extends conference record to 8-0

Morehead State University volleyball team, which is going strong in the 2011 season, added another victory to their count by defeating Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on Friday, October 7.
The Wetherby Gym in Morehead, Kentucky set up the field of play for the thrilling match. MSU posted 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-14) victory over TTU and improved to a 13-5 record for the year. Besides that, it marked the teams 8th straight win for MSU at Ohio Valley
Conference (OVC) play, 8-0. On the other hand, Golden Eagled dropped to 2-16, 1-7 OVC.
The hosts MSU kept things close in the opening frame but eventually pulled away from TTU using a strong offence and solid defence in next two sets.
TTU’s Freshman Ellen Conti was the most effective player on her team as she tallied a team-high 6 kills. Junior Madison Comperry helped the team with 11 assists. Junior Ellie Roberson of MSU tallied eight kills with a hitting percentage of .417. Overall,
the MSU pitched out 16 serve-aces during the match including five from Aryn Bohannon and Leslie Schellhaas, while Caitlin Clark recorded match-high 31 assists. TTU suffered the set-back on account of too many attack errors, while MSU dominated by displaying
great accuracy and precision in their shots.
In the first set of the match, both teams showed good energy and played skilfully. MSU scored first point of the game with a kill from Laura McDermott. With a couple of aces and kills, they took the score to 5-2.  Meanwhile, TTU came up with counter attacks
and managed to steal some points from MSU. They tied the score at 7-7 before MSU used strong offensive attack by Penrod and Bohannon and retook the lead. However, TTU did not let them get away so easily and offered strong resistance. They were close to MSU
score up till the second technical timeout but lost momentum afterwards. MSU locked them at 17 points and achieved the set points, 25-17.
The loss of first set dragged TTU under huge pressure, which further led them to a disastrous performance in the following set. MSU built an early lead and moved to 6-2 at first technical timeout. Tennessee girls failed to put up with the hard-hitting of
opposite side and seemed to have lost their form. On contrary, MSU took full advantage of their nervousness and pushed their lead to 15-3. Golden Eagles could only score 9 points, while MSU jumped to 2-0 by winning second set 25-9.
MSU had the total control of operations in third set. They pulled off success by sending 25-14 on board and declared match victory, 3-0.
