MT. Everest. first expedition, who?

Did sir Edmund Hillary make it to the summit on that first expedition or not? and did his Cherpa make it to the summit also?

it is not cherpa but Sherpa,a tribe of nepal who lives in the mountain area of nepal who are famous for climbing mountains.

i am not sure but i think Sir Ed. Hillary is regarded as first to reach top of Everest when both of them were very near to top of everest   Sir Hillary asked Sherpa to wait for a while and he reached top of the everest.these is what I heard from my teachers in nepal..........

I was listening to a National Public Radio special and apparently, Sir Edmund Hillary wanted to give the credit to his sherpa but somehow ended up getting stuck with the honor.
