What trains would I have to take to get from garden city, Long island to get to White Plains NY. And back?

I wouldn't take the subway to get from Penn to Grand Central.  It's faster to take a cab, if you have no luggage and aren't in a rush I would just walk.

Take the LIRR to Penn Station (34th St), then take the NYC subway #1, 2 or 3 train uptown to 42nd St.  Transfer to the 42nd St Shuttle (S) to Grand Central.  From there take MetroNorth to White Plains.
