Question:

MTG: What should I use in my Merfolk deck for speed: Teferi or Magus of the Future, or both?

I use a blue/white Merfolk deck with decent draw strength (blue planeswalker and Fallowsages) and creature pump (Merrow Rejeerey and Lord of Atlantis and Door of Destinties) as well as token creation. But I want this deck even faster, while limiting the options of the player. That's why I thought about Teferi, since that would stop Suspend spells from the other player and Cradle to the Grave (I really hate that spell of all spells) but I also thought about Magus of the Future, since that would keep me from stuffing my hand with lands by playing them from the top of my deck so it's like drawing every time I play a land. Any suggestions would be nice.

  1. If you're looking to limit the options of the other player you are better off putting in some counter spells if you're simply looking to stop certain spells from being used. I would suggest cancel or familiars ruse, or both.

Teferi and Magus of the Future both cost 5 mana and unless you are getting mana sources other than lands this means you will be waiting until turn 5 at the latest for a card you plan on having speed up your deck.

Other cards that can help would be things like Ponder, Index, Sage Owl or any other card that lets you look at and reorder cards in your deck.

  2. Magus would be especially good for mana clumps.  If you're wanting the speed, go with the Magus, it's an obvious card advantage because if you've got extra mana you can play spells.  The Teferi would be better for control.  Your creatures could come into play whenever, but unless you were playing part control, that wouldn't be too useful, and you wouldn't have the card advantage unless you put both cards in.  I don't really see how it would stop suspend spells, because as long as he played it during his turn, it would still go off.  It would stop counterspells and instants during your turn.
