Question:

MUSICAL Audition Into the Woods?

I heard you shouldn't pick an audition song from the past 5 years. Is that true? I'd really like to sing a Legally Blonde song.

  1. Rebekah is almost totally right; the only thing I'd say is that for an audition for a Sondheim show, you SHOULD sing a Sondheim song - his style is unique and the only way you can show the casting director that you can sing a Sondheim song is to sing another Sondheim song!  Legally Blonde is not suitable at all; have a listen to some Sondheim cast recordings and pick a song that you like and go with that.

  2. Whatever you do, DON'T do Legally Blonde. Here's a list of donts:

    -Anything currently on Broadway

    -Les Miserables

    -Cats

    -Evita

    -The Sound Of Music

    -Anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber

-Anything by Stephen Sondheim (however, Into The Woods is Sondheim, and in some cases it is alright to audition a song from the musical. I'd say you can do a song from Into The Woods)

-A pop song, meaning something that's not from a musical

-Any "show stopper" song such as "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"

-"Written In The Stars" and "Dance Of The Robes" from Aida

Now after knowing those things, you probably need some reccomendations.

"Turn Back, O Man" - Godspell

"Not For The Life Of Me" - Thoroughly Modern Millie

"Far From The Home I Love" - Fiddler On The Roof

Classic songs from Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady are always a plus.
