MX 6124 Gateway notebook screen stays black when.... When I power on my notebook the screen stays

Question

When I power on my notebook the screen stays black. You can hear the computer powering up and the lights on the computer indicate that it is in fact powering up but the screen stays black. This does not happen all the time, just enough to make it very difficult to use the computer. The computer is only 2 years old and it was about 1100 dollars so I am trying to decide if it's better to have it repaired or just buy a new one.
