I have had him for about one year. How long do they live ?

I clean his tank once a week and put in the water cleaner stuff.

He was fine but about a week ago he started changing.

  1. This does not bode well for your fish.  Of course, we don't know how bettas live in the wild, so it's probably due to unnatural conditions.

  2. Well, he could have been a year when you got him, and they only live 2-3 years. It might be dropsy. It is uncurable.=(

Dropsy is caused by poor water quality.

Edit:Ziggy, all bettas in pet stores are fancy bettas. They could not survive in the wild. The betta was not a wild caught betta or it would lok way different!

  3. Betta's that are kept properly can live up to 7 years.  To do well a betta needs a 5 gallon heated filtered tank.  They become very lethargic and lose color if the water is too cold and it is very stressful for them to be constantly moved for water changes in small tanks.  The ideal temperature for a betta is around 80F.
