  1. Expected Family Contribution.  The school(s) you've applied to will have a Total Cost of Attendance (or something similarly named).

You're almost certain to get loans, and possibly some grant money.  Your school will have to tell you for certain.

  2. Your EFC is your Expected Financial Contribution. This is what you are expected to be able to pay for college based on your income.  This amount is subtracted from what it costs to attend your chosen university. The difference is usually what is covered by financial aid.  Universities will include your living expenses, books, etc when calculating your cost to attend... so those things should be factored in when they offer you your award amount.

For example, say tuition & fees costs about $4000 per semester. Thats $8000 per year for tuition and fees. Your university should also factor in books, living expenses, etc and may come up with an amount close to $16000 per year to attend. Your EFC, or Expected Family Contribution, is 2268. Subtract that from $16000 and you get $13732.

Your school would probably give you this amount in a combination of grants, scholarships, and loans. How much you get depends on WHEN you applied, and how much money your school has available to give. If you applied early, you will get more grants, and less loans. If you applied late, you will get less grants, and more loans. If you applied really late, the school may not be able to meet your needs... thus you may get less than what is required to attend.

**living expenses may NOT be factored in if you stated that you will be living with your parents on your FAFSA.

**community colleges tend to give less than universities

  3. Expected Family Contribution that is how much your family is supposed to contribute toward your college tuition but i'm pretty sure loans can cover that
