MY HERMIT CRABS LEGS FELL OFF!!!!?

Question

i got a hermit crab the other day at the mall and its my first one! i named herr latoya! but the day after i bought her and i picked her up and A LEG AND CLAW FELL OFF!!! shes still alive today (2 days later) i can tell cause she slightly moves when picked her up so see if she was still alive but shes doesnt eat or drink and never moved since her legs fell off!!!!!! WHATS WRONG WITH HER???? is she dieing? im soo scared!!!! i never had a hermit crab before so how do i take care of her???

my hermit crab's legs fell off too... within minutes it was dead :'( the ones that u get at the ocean are really not kept in good cages.... at least the ones i ever saw maybe it was just not healthy. its either molting or dying so... :(

This is not moulting behaviour. When they moult they shed their exoskeleton. They will not drop limbs prior to moulting limb loss has nothing to do with moulting.

If the animal can survive to moult then the limbs will grow back. but just to emphasize again dropping legs is not moulting.

loosing limbs means the animal is very stressed. Either from poor conditions in a pet shop or because of conditions in the current enclosure. Hermit crabs need high humidity to breath, they also need fresh and ocean water free of chlorine. They need fresh foods and natural nonpainted shells. If exposed to any chemicals or dry conditions they become stressed.

Hermit crabs are a wild caught species and this can also take a heavy toll on them. Unfortunatly the pet industry has done a good job of spreading terrible care information which leads to the death of many hermit crabs.

What you need to do now is boost the humidity in the enclosure. Provide the animal something soft to eat. Mashed bananas, honey, natural peanut butter that sort of thing.
