MY MODEM IS s******g UP MY GAMING!

Question

I am trying to load the program "steam" onto my computer, it is made for updating games through the internet. But, everytime i try to load it, it tries to get through to the internet to update, and it doesn't let it. What can i do to fix it? i think it may be a problem with my modem, i have an ActionTec GT701-WG if that matters. THANKS/
