my gerbil is a black gerbil and its 4th birthday was about two weeks ago.

but this morning i went to play with him and his eyes were closes and he could barely walk or anything.

he just lays down on my hand and lays his head on my thumb and he used to scurry and would walk on my hands.

I'm almost sure he's near death.

and i want these few hours to be the best they can.

what can i do to keep him happy until his time?

  1. Every there is the sound of old age just let him go! if he looks like he is in pain see the vet and get him put down,

the best thing you can do is give him love hold him and say goodbye

if he not in pain take him to the vet will do not but cost you money, gerbil only live for 2 to 5, 4 is a very good age

  2. Just give him nice bedding and let him have a dignified rodent death.

Dont listen to the idiots who say take it to the vet. HELLO..it is already one year past its normal lifespan. The vet will probably put it to sleep and charge you a fortune to do it.

  3. Ah..... Same story with me... Make sure he had water... And.. Mine died. He was old and crabby so I held him and gave him little drops of water and sang to him. Sounds silly, But I loved my little gerbil.. I kuddled mine too. Mine was black too. His name was stripes...

  4. Hi,your gerbil is *very old* just make sure he is comfortable & warm.

Sounds like he is on his way out, don't take him to the vets its will just make him frightened & confused.

Please don't listen to people who say to take him to the vets, obviously they don't know anything about gerbils, otherwise they wouldn't suggest that there is *NOTHING* A vet can do,all they would do is tell you to take him home.

Gerbils normally die this way, please don't worry just try & either/& be there with him & make him as comfortable as possible for the little guy.

All i can say is you should be please & proud of yourself for making a wonderful life for him,as 4 years is the higher end of a gerbils life span,so you have obviously looked after him very well.

Thank you for being a great pet owner, all the bestxxx

P.S to Adele, the person above you is not cruel,i totally agree with them, god you are so wrong.

  5. call the vetrinarian, tell him whats the matter and he should hopefully help. sorry to hear this! Good luck<3

  6. aw I'm sorry to hear your gerbil is poorly. Give him lots of cuddles and if you can stay with him and stroke him. If he wants to eat you can give him his favourite food. And put a little water on your finger, and onto his mouth so it doesn't get too dry. Just try to keep him comfortable. He knows already that you care for him, so he'll be comforted by your voice when you talk to him. I hope you know you have taken good care of him for him to be 4!

  7. If your gerbil is four then you have already taken very good care of him and given him a good life. I've had hamsters and the vet and pet shop owners all seem to put a two year life expectancy on them. I understand how you must be feeling but try to think about how you have cared for him all this time. About all you can do now is try to keep him comfortable. Don't try to make him eat or anything. It would probably be best and more comfortable for him if he was lying down on something a little more stable than your hand. Just pet his little head if you feel you need to let him know you are there. Best wishes.

  8. feed him lots and and be caring to him if he starts struggling for death put him out of his misery

    my choices r

    flush him down the loo

    chop is head off

    choke him

    get a cat on him

  9. OMG!  Call the vet.  It could be something very curable.  Don't assume this is the end of the line.  And certainly do not do any of the things the previous post suggested-(CRUEL AND NASTY!!).

  10. get it to  the  veterinary  fast , being a pet parent  you should know better

  11. You could try offering some watermelon. its a sugary watery treat. You have done a wonderfull job if he is four. WAY TO GO!!   Don't worry about the vet. all that will do is stress him out and take away from the little time you have left to hold him. Keep him warm and comfy. wrap him in a cloth and talk to him allot. let him hear your voice. Try your best (i know it can be hard) not to cry until its over. they can tell when your upset. just keep him close. pet his body and head. offer him the melon but don't force it. Also. you need to let him know its ok for him to go. he may not understand the words....but he will feel the meaning.

i feel badly for you impending loss. but WOW what a cool four years eh?

    hang in there

  12. your Gerbil is a very old one , and is very lucky to still be alive, take him to the vet, and see what the prob is. it could be just old age. good luck (Y)
