Ma’a Nonu and Piri Weepu return for Hurricanes in the next Super Rugby clash
Hurricanes have finally got something to cheer about in the ongoing Super Rugby as two of their players, Ma’a Nonu and Piri Weepu, return to the team after being sidelined due to respective injuries. Both players will feature in the Hurricanes’ clash against
the Highlanders on Friday, May 13, in Invercargill.
Nonu is coming back from an eye injury he sustained during the early rounds of the current season. He will replace Daniel Kirkpatrick at second-five position. The Hurricanes midfielder confirmed that his fractured eye socket had recovered and he would play
the next Super Rugby game.
During his absence from the team, Nonu was reported to have signed with French club, Montpellier. However, he refuted all those rumours and confirmed he was staying with the Hurricanes. The player did mention though, that his contract with New Zealand Rugby
Union would come to an end after this year’s Rugby World Cup.
While speaking about his future prospects, Nonu said in an interview, “I've played here for a long time, so the next couple of months will be just thinking about what I want to do. You ask any rugby player at the crossroads of their career and they will
tell you it's kind of hard ... you might be playing for the Canes or the Blues and when you sign overseas it's a new challenge.”
Meanwhile, the other injured Hurricanes player, Piri Weepu will make his first appearance in this year’s Super Rugby tournament against the Highlanders. Weepu hasn’t featured in any match since October 2010, when he broke his ankle in a National Provincial
Championship match.
“It is slowly getting there, but this is another step up from club level. I'm not as worried about it and just have to make sure I'm not getting caught up too much and stay as confident as I can,” said Weepu while speaking of his recovery, and the prospects
of playing for the Hurricanes.
The 27-year-old Weepu was picked for the Super Rugby Championship after he won the confidence of coach Mark Hammett. Hammet was impressed by the halfback’s performances in club rugby, and was sure Weepu could replicate those for the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes
will take on the Highlanders on 13th May, in their next Super Rugby match.
