Maasai Spirit wins The Coral on TV Maiden Trophy – Heat 3 at Romford
The black dog, Maasai Spirit, heralded a huge upset by beating two joint favourites, to win the Grade OR The Coral On TV Maiden Trophy – Heat 3 at Romford track on January 16. The race was run over a distance of 400m.
The conquering runner bagged the victory with a big margin of 4 ¾ lengths.
He competed against Risky Blue, Droopys Bieber, Jazz Gibbo, Lady Faye and Volante.
Droopys Bieber and Lady Faye were the joint favourites with starting price of 3 to 1, each.
The race started at 20:31, and breaking from trap 1, Maasai Spirit jumped ahead aggressively, and flashed his good form along the way.
Much to the surprise of the bookies, the dog bumped and led within a blink of an eye.
However, the spectators were not yet ready to believe that the son of Head Bound would be able to sustain his front position.
However, the fast and furious Maasai Spirit kept increasing his speed after every stride towards the wire.
In the middle of the track, he opened up a considerable advantage from his opponents. It turned the race into a nail-biting contest as a non-favourite hound was browbeating all others, comfortably.
Finally, the trainee of A J Ingram reached the finish line in 24.21 seconds.
Whelped in August 2009, the dashing dog ran for the fifth time yesterday, after staging his debut on November 19, 2011, at the same venue.
Maasai Spirit achieved this position for the second time. The dog’s trainer was much pleased with his performance, anticipating a bright future for him.
By winning yesterday’s race so magnificently, the rookie hound is likely to establish himself as a favourite for the upcoming events. He received the cash prize of £150.
Risky Blue finished second in the race by bridging the distance in 24.59 seconds. He was trailing by 4 ¾ lengths.
After breaking from trap 3, the hound powered down the stretch with good pace in the beginning, but failed to carry it forward. Whelped in July 2009, the son of Killahan Phanter is trained by M A Wallis.
The third top position went to Droopys Bieber, who was also the joint favourite to win the race. After breaking from trap 4, he crossed the boundary strap in 24.60 seconds.
The brindle dog badly disappointed his trainer, J W Reynolds, and the bookies alike.
The second joint favourite hound, Lady Faye, finished fifth in the race.
