Mac Danzig vs. Joe Stevenson added to UFC 124 fight card
Mac Danzig and Joe Stevenson will reportedly face each other at the Ultimate Fighting Championships' UFC 124 on 11 December at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.
MMAjunkie.com is reporting that the two former winners of
The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) television program have joined the UFC 124 fight card. The headlining bout of the evening will be a welterweight title bout between the champion, Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck.
Since winning season six of “TUF”, Danzig has not fared well in the UFC, posting a record of 3-4. On the other hand, Stevenson has posted a record of 8-5 since winning season two of the UFC’s reality program.
Danzig’s last fight was against Matt Wiman at UFC 115 in June of this year. The fight ended in controversy at the 1:45 mark of the first round. Wiman had Danzig in a guillotine choke when referee Yves
Lavigne, thinking Danzig had slipped into unconsciousness, called a stop to the fight. Danzig immediately protested the decision, but Lavigne stood by his call and Wiman was declared the victor.
The fighters agreed to a rematch that was scheduled for September, however that bout was scrapped when both fighters were injured.
Stevenson is also coming off a loss in his last fight, dropping a unanimous decision to George Sotiropoulos in February of this year. Both fighters took home $50,000 bonuses that night when they were
given “Fight of the Night” honours.
Like Danzig, Stevenson had to bow out of his next scheduled fight due to injury. Stevenson was booked for an August battle against former Pride champion Takanori Gomi, but had to withdraw due to a knee
injury.
In a June 2010 fight that was crucial to his UFC career, Danzig defeated Justin Buchholz via unanimous decision. Buchholz was subsequently released from the UFC, a fate that most likely would have awaited
Danzig if he had lost.
Stevenson has competed in a number of high profile battles including losses to B.J. Penn, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. His biggest win since the TUF finals victory was a unanimous decision victory
over Nate Diaz in June 2009. That fight netted the combatants an extra $25,000 when it won “Fight of the Night.”
Danzig vs. Stevenson will join St. Pierre vs. Koscheck, Stefan Struve vs. Sean McCorkle and Mark Bocek vs. Dustin Hazelett at UFC 124. To date, no other matches have been mentioned for the fight card.
