Question:

Mac: I can't empty my trash can?

I moved an audio file to the trash can because it wasn't working. However, when I try to empty the trash, it says the file is still in use. I've deleted every copy of the same audio file I could find, but the computer says it's still in use. What can I do to fix it?

  1. Look at "Files in use by other Applications" half way down the page.

  2. First make sure no open applications are using it. If nothing is using it then it's probably just a slightly annoying glitch in OS X that pops up every now and then. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and type "killall Finder" (without the quotes) and hit enter. Finder will close all open windows, quit, then relaunch. Try emptying your trash. If it still won't delete, try logging out and logging back in or restarting your Mac. If you still can't get the trash to empty, head to the nearest Apple store and get someone there to help you.
