Mac Question... help!?

every time i close my macbook the internet connection goes away. its kinda annoying considering i want to keep an away message up on AIM and stuff. and its not just the internet... if im syncing my ipod and then close it it will cancel the sync. anyone know how or if i can fix this?

You close the Macbook and it goes to sleep, it is effectively switched off (just in a way that lets you get back to where you were quickly).

You can't maintain network connections or syncing while switched off.
