Mac coding question!?

I am curious if there is an application as simple as notepad on the pc but for mac. I am curious if there is still a way to edit html etc, on a mac or is there another program i could download to do this?

You could always try:

Applications > Textedit

Personally I use the command line for my programming as it is faster. It takes time to learn the workings of the command line and how to utilize it.

With tools such as ftp, curl, vi, emacs, tar, zip... You will be flying in no time. And I only mention these because you asked for a text editor and not a design application, and you will be only dealing with text.
