Mac not recognizing Sony DCR-SR42 movie files, what can I do?

I have to import these movies I took but after I take it off the camera it says it does not recognize it as a movie file. What can I do to convert it into a movie file?

    Translate the files to something iMovie likes... .mov or .mp4 or .DV

    Then drag/drop the translated files to iMovie.
